With GLA, Mercedes aims for younger shopper
Mercedes-Benz is poised to take aim at the growing compact crossover
segment with the five-door GLA -- a vehicle company executives say will
be packed with premium features but carry a competitive price tag.
Mercedes is unveiling a concept version of the GLA crossover at the Shanghai auto show. It's a wedge-shaped vehicle that doesn't have the boxy, masculine and in-your-face design of the larger Mercedes-Benz GLK.
That's good because the GLA is aimed at new buyers who probably don't have Mercedes-Benz on their shopping lists.
In other words, this is not a soccer mom's car but a vehicle that could compete with Subaru's Forester, the Volvo XC60, Acura RDX, Range Rover Evoque and BMW X1.
The GLA is the third vehicle built on the new front-wheel-drive platform that spawned the slippery CLA compact sedan that goes on sale in the United States in September and the five-door B-class electric due in early 2014.
The GLA goes on sale in September 2014 and will be priced higher than the CLA that starts at $30,825 including destination, Mercedes-Benz USA executives say. But it's not likely to go much above the BMW X1 -- the crossover that will likely be the GLA's prime competitor. Pricing on the X1 sDrive28i starts at $31,695, including destination.
The GLA concept has a 2.0-liter gasoline turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 208 hp -- the CLA has the same powerplant -- teamed with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The concept has all-wheel drive; the base production crossover likely will have front-wheel drive.
The GLA will be slotted below the GLK -- the smallest Mercedes-Benz crossover currently sold. It has a length of 172.5 inches, is 77.8 inches wide and 62.1 inches tall. In comparison, the GLK has a length of 178 inches, is 74.3 inches wide and 66.9 inches tall.
"The Concept GLA marks a new approach for us in the compact SUV segment this is a sporty and more coupe-like evolution of this category of vehicle," said Joachim Schmidt, executive president of sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz.
The GLA borrows some styling features from the larger Mercedes-Benz crossovers, including the front skid plate, a load sill guard and a twin-pipe exhaust system. The concept has an electronically powered tailgate.
The concept has toys for the auto show crowd. The front headlamps are each fitted with a laser-beam projector that lights up the road -- and everything else in front of it. Mercedes says the system can project pictures or videos onto a screen or any surface. Imagine trying to get that through NHTSA's approval process.
Mercedes-Benz isn't spelling out the list of luxury and safety features that will be standard and optional on the production car. Those details will have to wait until this fall's Frankfurt auto show where the production GLA will debut.

Next-Gen Mercedes-Benz C Class To Offer Diesel, Hybrid Options
Prototypes for the new C Class sedan have been spotted testing across Europe for over a year, while those for the new convertible have only just appeared.
Though the prototypes provide plently of clues as to what the cars will look like, they shed little detail on what will be powering them. Now, thanks to comments from Mercedes’ U.S. chief, Steve Cannon, we know the new C Class will offer diesel and hybrid options in addition to the regular gasoline offerings. Speaking with Automotive News (subscription required), Cannon said the new C Class will make its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show before landing in showrooms in August of that same year, making it a 2015 model. Coupe and convertible versions will arrive about a year after the sedan, about which time new diesel, hybrid and all-wheel-drive options will also be offered. A high-performance AMG version is also in the pipeline and should be on sale by then. The diesel C Class will likely feature the 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine currently fitted to the GLK250, where it produces 190 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid model, meanwhile, will likely pair a four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor. The expansion of the C Class range has been devised to better compete with the Mercedes’ main rival, BMW’s 3-Series lineup of cars. One advantage Mercedes has is that the new C Class will be manufactured in the U.S., which is cheaper to produce in than in Germany, where the 3-Series is sourced. Mercedes will also produce a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the U.S. with its alliance partner Nissan, which it will offer in the new C Class.Courtesy of Motor Authority

2014 Mercedes A 45 AMG “Edition 1” stands apart
Leave it up to Mercedes-AMG to come up with the A 45 AMG that sets the
benchmark in the high-performance compact class. And then the
performance division of Mercedes takes it to another level by offering
the new 2014 Mercedes A 45 AMG “Edition 1”. The all-new exclusive
performance compact is available for sale now in Europe. The 2014 A 45 AMG
was recently unveiled at the International Motor Show in Geneva last
month, but this new “Edition 1” stands apart even more in the new
A-Class range. What makes the A 45 AMG and new “Edition 1” so enticing?
Powerful and fuel-efficient
It starts in the performance area with the A 45 AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant delivering 265 kW (360 hp) and a peak torque of 450 Newton meters (295 lb ft). The compact performance car will sprint from 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Mercedes-Benz is targeting a new generation of buyers with the hot new compact. Mercedes will target predominantly urban buyers who are in the 30 to mid-40 age group with an agile high-performance vehicle.
This new target group of buyers will be looking for efficiency and the A 45 AMG consumes just 6.9 liters of petrol per 100 kilometres. Mercedes says the new AMG engine already complies with the EU6 emissions standard. It comes fitted standard with a performance-tuned AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system that transfers power to all four wheels for optimum traction in wet or dry conditions.
A 45 AMG "Edition 1" is expressive and exclusive
Mercedes has announced a new A 45 AMG "Edition 1" that stands apart even more in the A-Class range. It is exclusive in terms of both a technical level and in its unique appearance. It features a number of exclusive exterior and interior details that set it apart. The new "Edition 1" gets its exclusive exterior treatments that are motorsport-inspired. It gets two packages, an AMG Night package and the Aerodynamics package that come standard on the "Edition 1".
Special "Edition 1" treatments inside and out
On the outside, the A 45 AMG "Edition 1" Cirrus White exterior paint is complemented by AMG sports stripes in matt graphite grey on the hood, roof and sides. It also features red detailing on the radiator grille, exterior mirrors and rear aerofoil. The new “Edition 1” rolls on 8 x 19 AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels and wrapped in 235/35 R 19 performance tires. Red painted brake callipers can be seen peaking through the matt black finished multi-spoke wheels.
Inside, the new performance compact features a sporty black and red interior with red contrasting topstitching on the AMG performance seats. They are finished in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfiber, with the top section of the dashboard in ARTICO man-made leather and the AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfiber. The final touches are the E-Select lever with embossed AMG emblem and the "Edition 1" badge on the AMG Drive Unit.
Mercedes has released German pricing on the new performance compact at A 45 AMG: 49,682.50 euros and A 45 AMG "Edition 1": 56,977.20 euros. Mercedes-AMG is embarking on a new era with the 2014 A 45 AMG. The German automaker is capturing a new target group of buyers and markets for the Affalterbach-based performance brand. Unfortunately those new buyers won't be in the U.S. The sales release date started April 8, 2013 with the market launch in Germany beginning June 2013.

2014 Mercedes C63 AMG “Edition 507” pushes the performance envelope
Mercedes-Benz is not standing still in their global product
offensive, and the U.S. market will see five new models that are at the
New York International Auto Show. The new 2014 C63 AMG “Edition 507” is
coming with even more power and performance with coupe, sedan and wagon
variants. Other newcomers will include the battery-electric B-class
Electric Drive and the high-performance CLA 45 AMG four-door coupe,
both of which are celebrating their world premiere at the 2013 NYIAS.
Also making their U.S. debuts will be the series-production version of
the new CLA-Class, the all-wheel drive wagon version of the E 63 AMG
S-Model, and the smart fortwo electric drive.
Mercedes is bringing an onslaught of new vehicles to the U.S. and to other global markets in 2013. The German automaker saw record sales in 2012 and they are continuing the momentum with more new models. Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales & Marketing said, “The new E-Class will reach the market in two weeks and, based on the excellent feedback we have been receiving, will certainly deliver a powerful sales impulse. We are expecting further volume growth in the second half of the year, too, with our other newcomers.” How did Mercedes-AMG increase the power and performance of the new special edition C63 AMG to make it even better for driving enthusiasts?
More horsepower and torque for driving enthusiasts
Mercedes bestselling C63 AMG makes its entry as the exclusive 2014 C63 AMG “Edition 507” with 507 hp from the hand-built AMG V8 engine. The new performance AMG gets an increase of 37 kW (50 hp) to 373 kW (507 hp) and a maximum torque of 610 Nm (450 lb.-ft.). The power increase comes from technology from the SLS AMG that features forged pistons and the lightweight crankshaft. The new 2014 C63 AMG “Edition 507” is available from Mercedes as a sedan, wagon and coupe.
The special edition definitely pushes the envelope and is aimed at driving enthusiasts who take pleasure in high-performance, top-flight technology and an array of exclusive design and equipment details. Mercedes says the new 2014 C63 AMG "Edition 507" coupe and sedan will launch from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. This new high-performance model outperforms the existing 451 hp C63 model by three-tenths of a second, and the variants with the AMG Development Package which produce 481 hp and will be two-tenths of a second faster. It will also have a top speed of 174 mph. Those numbers should make any performance enthusiast smile.
Other "Edition 507" performance enhancements
Other performance enhancements included on the new 2014 C63 AMG "Edition 507", include a more powerful AMG high-performance braking system featuring compound construction technology. Mercedes is also giving the exterior of the C63 AMG "Edition 507" some exclusive new design features. The hood originates from the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series that Mercedes introduced late last year. An AMG sports stripe applique in matte graphite grey is located above the rocker panels and sets the "Edition 507" apart from the standard version. Mercedes is also offering "Edition 507" buyers the choice of three different equipment and options for the interior.
Mercedes is expecting the C63 AMG "Edition 507" to help the company increase sales in the U.S. market. “We have made an excellent start in 2013 and expect our first quarter sales in the U.S. to be the best ever. The new models will help us surf high up that success wave as the year continues,” says Stephen Cannon, CEO and President of Mercedes-Benz USA.
The model's sales release is scheduled to begin on April 8, 2013, while the market launch in Germany will commence in June of this year. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG "Edition 507" coupe, sedan and wagon will be available in the U.S. this summer. Pricing will be announced closer to its global market launch. Performance buyers who choose the new special edition C63 AMG will get a level of performance that pushes the performance envelope more than ever before.
