Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Tires
A car tire inflated to 35 pounds per square inch (psi) can lose one psi every month or for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change, so your car maintenance checklist should include checking tire pressure. Find the recommended level in the owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb. And don’t forget the spare.
Rotate tires every 6,000 miles to prevent uneven wear, replace them when they become worn and have the alignment checked if the car pulls to either side when driving or if you notice uneven tire wear.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Transmission fluid
Checking the automatic transmission fluid is another vital item on the car maintenance checklist. Look for a reservoir marked ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and follow the same steps as monitoring the oil level – only this time, with the engine running. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for change intervals, about every 30,000 miles.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe review notes
The car has monster grip, allowing me take some back-road corners as fast as anything I've driven. And tires never once screamed out in mercy. The car just stuck to the pavement and went around the corner. The steering in this car, while still having a bit of play on-center, is fast and direct. On varying pavement, the monster 19-inch tires require some work to keep the car running straight, as it wants to tramline. The brakes are outstanding, too.
The flat, or matte, paint coupled with the huge fender flares and the front splitter and rear diffuser, adds another level of bad-assness to the car.
Inside, the carbon fiber trim looks great and the red seatbelts match up nicely with the red contrasting stitching in the leather trim. I really like the Alcantara-clad, flat-bottomed steering wheel and the Alcantara seat inserts. All of this screams performance, and the car delivers exactly what is expected.
SENIOR MOTORSPORTS EDITOR MAC MORRISON: In 2003, after years of watching the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM to the rest of us) on TV, I attended a round of the racing series at Hockenheim. I have ever since then wished one of the participating German manufacturers (Audi, BMW or Mercedes AMG) would build a street car in the mold of the race-spec touring cars.
Ah, guten tag, Herr C63 AMG.
This is a very special car, as much because of its relative scarcity as its price tag or performance resume. AMG allegedly built somewhere around 800, most all of which are spoken for, with only, er, some undisclosed number of those coming the U.S. Despite my best efforts badgering my friends at Mercedes-Benz USA, the actual numbers remain an internal secret. Regardless, the odds of ever seeing more than one or two on the road (unless perhaps you live in Miami or Los Angeles) are fantastically low—which explains why it seems as though every other car you encounter while driving this Black Series carries a camera- (or cell phone-) wielding occupant snapping off pics like a manic automotive spy photographer.
Photographs do not necessarily reflect just how imposing this car is in the metal, and do a poor job of capturing the evil beauty of its matte-finish paint, named officially “designo Magno Alanite Grey,” which could double as the name of one of Spider-Man's nemeses.
The well-engineered hot-rod nature of the C63 Black Series inspired a friend of mine—a hard-core car guy—to comment, “This is like a German Mustang GT500,” and I knew what he meant immediately; it was not an insult. From the heavy controls to the angry intake and exhaust noises to the seat-deforming acceleration, you know always that you are in a Mercedes-built machine, but one that tangents violently away from its base model. This car has as much in common with a normal C-coupe, in terms of feel, feedback and performance, as a base-model Mustang does to the drag-strip melting Shelby model. Not much, in other words.
The engine and exhaust sounds do not overwhelm the experience unless you punch your right foot all the way through the floorboard; otherwise, the Black Series returns surprisingly low decibel readings more than appropriate and comfortable for cruising and conversing. The only thing that will potentially disrupt a relaxing drive—should you want to use this car for such a task in the first place—is the unforgiving ride on roads that feature significant expansion joints, frost heaves, cracks, etc.—this is a stiff suspension designed to kill corners, not coddle driver and passengers. As a result, and as we've noted on other Black Series offerings, the ride frequency over certain types of uneven highway is porpoise-like at times, exhibiting a fair amount of vertical choppiness that potentially becomes tiresome on long stretches. The track-tunable suspension is adjustable manually with tools, but I did not get into messing with the factory setup.
Throttle response is strong, my only complaint being at-times sluggish response from the automatic gearbox, even in manual mode. A true double-clutch unit is called for here, though this transmission is more than adequate for enthusiastic, aggressive driving on public roads. My gut tells me that it will disappoint on the track, however. I also wished for a driver's seat with adjustable side bolsters; while this one is racer-ish in its design, it's a little on the wide side for me.
As expected, turn-in is much, much improved over lesser Mercedes products, and as Roger notes, the suspension tuning and ultra-low profile tires provide so much cornering grip that the only way you are likely to ever hear much tire shrieking is by way of power oversteer or burnouts . . . in which case, really, you're just going to hear engine noise.
Taller drivers—I'm 6'-1”—will find headroom at a premium, thanks to the large panoramic sunroof that required dropping the roof liner down to accommodate it. A few passengers were less than impressed with the passenger seat's lack of power adjustment (the driver's seat is power adjustable), and while AMG will say it went that route to save weight (perhaps the same thinking re: the non-adjustable side bolsters), I imagine more than a few buyers (and myself) would trade the marginal weight gain for the real-world convenience. This is not an actual DTM car, after all.
The package provides an overall fun experience—both behind the wheel and simply as you stand around to admire the bodywork. This is a critical aspect, because despite its loud bark and 510 hp, the C63's raw straight-line speed impresses but does not overwhelm. Zero-to-60 comes up in about four seconds, with the quarter-mile falling into the 12-second range. Both figures are rock solid, certainly, but you need not spend six figures to buy that sort of drag-strip performance.
However, there is a lot more at play here than raw numbers . . . and plenty of wide-eyed people along my drive route have the photos to prove it. I think it's pretty damn cool that they didn't even need travel to Hockenheim or the Norisring et. al. to snap them.
ROAD TEST EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: After a weekend with this wicked-looking 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series coupe, I'm a buyer—that is if I happen to win the lotto and can find one. I've gone on record proclaiming my enthusiasm for the C63 AMG in sedan form and I'm going to do it again here.
The wide, composite body panels are menacing and the flat paint job only helps complete the look. No giant spoiler is needed here, but the large front air dam looks imposing coming at you like it wants to beat you up and take your lunch money. So it's safe to say that I like the DTM race-car looks.
Then there's the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 that also sees duty now in the SLS AMG instead of the turbocharged V8 that AMG has been installing in other products like the E63 and S63. Throttle response is magnificent and there's just something about the all-motor rumble. Mac mentions that the seven-speed automatic gearbox is slow to response at times, which is true, but it does the job well-enough. The dual-clutch from the SLS AMG would no doubt be better—or a manual, but that's never going to happen.
Yes, the suspension is stiff and does hop around some over larger ruts but I didn't think ride quality was unbearable even on these wide, high-performance 19-inch tires. It's far from it in my opinion, and I would happily drive this around on a daily basis. Toss this thing into a corner, however, and you'll be experiencing more grip than you'll ever need on the street; and it handles side-to-side weight shifts confidently. Kill stability aids and you can rotate the rear around corners yourself easier with the help of the throttle. In the end, it's all a whole lot of fun that'll have you staying out even later at night to bomb around your favorite backroads.
Everything thing else from a performance standpoint is great with grabby brakes and weighty, responsive steering.
The front bucket seats offer a lot of side support with very large bolsters that most likely would hamper a manual shifter, but they're fine and appreciated with an automatic to keep you locked down. The Alcantara on the sides of the steering wheel at the three- and nine-o'clock positions are nice, but it does get dirty quick on street cars. Our test car's wheel was already looking kind of nasty with some scum caked on from the oils and sweat from bare hands constantly handling it. In a race car where drivers normally wear gloves, that's not much of a problem.
It's a lot of money and there are a lot of other cars that you can buy for $107,000, but the exclusivity factor sure is nice and it's an entertaining drive. Even after thinking it over some more, yeah, I would buy one if I could.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4Matic Development Mule First Look
Mercedes-Benz is going to introduce the refreshed 2014 E-Class this January at the Detroit Show. That of course means a new E63 AMG is coming, both sedan and wagon. We love cars of that nature. We also noticed a couple of things when we tested the wildly excellent Audi S8 last month. One is that its 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 made around 575 horsepower (we stuck it on a dyno) and not 520 hp, as Audi claims. The other is that AWD makes a whole lot of sense in a near-600-hp sedan. And the S8 wasn't the first time we noticed the performance advantage AWD has over RWD in two-ton-plus sedans. When we pitted the AWD Porsche Panamera GTS against the RWD BMW M5, there was only a 0.1-second difference in the 0-60 time, despite near identical vehicle weights and the M5's 130 horsepower advantage over the Porsche. Moreover, the GTS was able to keep up with the M5 on twisty roads because of its traction advantage. We're obviously not the only folks noticing this trend, as AMG CEO Ola Kaellenius invited yours truly down to get a preview of the new E63 AMG 4Matic. Yup, for the first time ever, a non-SUV AMG product will come complete with AWD. And I got a day in the passenger seat.
"We didn't just use Mercedes' all-wheel-drive system. That wouldn't work for AMG." So said Ola a few days earlier at a sit down in our office. "Yeah," chimed in Tobias Moers, the refreshingly blunt head of AMG Vehicle Development. "We completely reengineered 4Matic to make it work for us." The biggest difference between regular 4Matic and the AMG version is a permanent torque split. In the Mercedes version, the standard split is 45/55 front/rear. However, if conditions change, torque can be moved to the wheels that are losing grip, from 30/70 to 70/30. Not so with the AMG version. Torque is cut 33/67 front to back, and that's how it stays. There are two main reasons why this is. One is that AMG is first and foremost a performance company. The second -- and this ties into the first -- is that by removing all three of the electronically locking clutches and reducing the size of the rear half-shafts, the AWD E63's weight only goes up by 132 pounds, according to AMG. A pretty impressive achievement if true -- we'll weigh it as soon as we can and let you know. The last E63 sedan we weighed checked in at 4347 pounds, meaning the AWD version could be as "light" as 4479 pounds, not much more than the RWD M5 (4406 pounds) if AMG is right. Also, Ola and Tobias did little more than smile at me when I asked, but I think we can infer that the next S63 will be AWD as well. The S65 will remain RWD.
I was given the rare opportunity for a ridealong in two of the three camouflaged pre-production 2014 E63 AMG 4Matic mules that currently exist. In fact, after myself and a few other auto-journo types were done, AMG crated 'em both up and shipped them off to Spain for further testing. Interestingly, the two cars were dressed differently. They were initially camo'd identically, but because one car would be running around an autocross course AMG set up on the former Marine base El Toro (where we film our World's Greatest Drag Race videos), Tobias ripped off the panels hiding the front fascia because they were blocking the radiator and the twin intercoolers. As you'll read in a bit, the car needed them. Much to the chagrin of the AMG PR folks, this partially revealed the new, much sportier-looking AMG corporate nose. The big news is a curved front splitter they're calling the A-Wing. (Let's hope Disney, which just bought "Star Wars," doesn't sue!) In the photos it's taped up black, but I strongly suspect that underneath it's chromed. The A-Wing is but a small part of AMG's new design language that we'll first see fully implemented when the new C-Class launches in about 18 months. Rumor has it that flics will be standard!
We set off towards the track from the unbelievably posh Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach in the silver, less disguised E63. AMG went so far as to camouflage the interior with a series of black, neoprene-like shrouds. About 20 seconds into our journey, Tobias tore off the piece covering the navigation screen. "It used to be beige," he spit, obviously annoyed at the halfhearted effort to conceal the refreshed E-Class's innards. "Now it's gray." Tobias was referring to the background color of the COMAND system. Benz must have shelled out for a more expensive video card, because the graphics in the test mule looked much sharper than in current Mercedes models. As for the rest of the interior, I didn't look too closely (the metal vents are pretty sweet), but the unhidden steering wheel looks much more "sportive."
As we roll up to the staging area, Tobias finds a nice secluded strip of runway to show me the refreshed E63's launch control. He twists the knob from C through S and S+ to Race Launch (just like in the range-topping SLS Gullwing), stands on the brake and the throttle, and dumps the brake. Yup. AWD makes an already extremely quick car feel even quicker. Consider this: The last E63 sedan we tested -- a 2012 model -- hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Tobias tells me that the new car will do 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. "Well, it does 100 kilometers an hour in 3.5 seconds. So, we removed a tenth." If 3.4 seconds is indeed accurate, the new E63 will be the quickest four-door vehicle in the world. Currently, the Porsche Panamera Turbo, Panamera Turbo S, and Audi S8 are all tied up at 3.5 seconds to 60 mph. And if that 0-60 time holds true, the next E63 should easily run the quarter-mile in the elevens. Based on the two blasts I experienced, it's hard to say. The mule felt quick, for sure. But it also happened to be sprinkling, and the runway we were on was not only slick, but in particularly poor shape. Obviously, as soon as they give us a production version we'll test the bejesus out of it. With AWD and launch control, you can expect a pretty sensational number. Especially because the E63 will be packing more wallop. We must first discuss how AMG used to do it, and still does it for the time being.
The current E63 comes with a 518 hp 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 516 lb-ft of torque. However, you can opt for the Performance Package, which nets you 550 hp and a ridiculous 590 lb-ft of twisting force. I can't get into the specifics (AMG made me promise to keep a bunch of stuff secret -- sorry) but you can forget about this two-pronged approach. Starting with this car, the M157 engine will produce 575 horsepower and an unspecified for now (though with AMG you can always assume more) amount of torque. That's right, the horsepower wars are dead like Frankenstein. The familiar seven-speed, wet-clutch planetary transmission remains. The cars I rode in didn't have it, but U.S.-spec E63s will have a rear limited-slip differential. Tobias claims the suspension hasn't been altered too much, but obviously the AWD components necessitated some fiddling -- a steering knuckle here, a refined damping rate there, etc. However, the front wheels receive 1.9 degrees of camber. Carbon ceramic brakes are still -- of course -- an option, and the silver mule had 'em. It also had fancy new Pirellis on the same size wheels as before 255/35R19 front, 285/30R19 rear. I should note that the horrible surfaces at El Toro (and the drifting) chewed them right up. I wouldn't be surprised if the production car showed up with some different meat.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Headlights and brake lights
With your car turned on and parked, have someone walk around to see that your lights are working – headlights, brake and tail lights, turn signals, etc.
Replacing bulbs in today’s vehicles can be a challenge. Have a mechanic do the job, particularly replacing and aiming headlights. A pro also knows if the problem is a blown fuse, not a burned out bulb.

Mercedes CLA45 AMG to Bow Next Year in Frankfurt
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Mercedes will debut its CLA45 AMG during the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as a close competitor to the BMW 135i.When that happens, the world will get a live look at what AutoCar says brand insiders are calling a “baby CLS63 AMG.” While Merc is still keeping details about the car close, it will use the same 2.0-liter four cylinders as the smaller A45 AMG. Expect 349 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
It wouldn’t be a big surprise if those power ratings turn out to be true considering the A45 version of the engine makes 325 hp, meaning this would be a massaged version with more power for a larger car.
Apart from using a four cylinder, which is a drastic change for AMG, the car will also be Mercedes’ first performance sedan to use a transverse engine layout.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Wiper Tales
Here's a news flash: It's much easier to avoid hitting things you can see. Simple as it is, that's the concept behind replacing your windshield wipers before they fossilize into noisy uselessness.
Fall is the ideal wiper replacement time: after the blade-baking summer and before the fall and winter nastiness. Depending on location, wiper replacement may be an annual affair in the Southwest to a biannual chore in northern climes.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Brakes and brake fluid
Check to ensure that brake fluid levels are within tolerance. How often you need to replace brake pads or other components depends on how you drive and typical driving conditions. Warning signs of a brake problem include noise, vibration or “grabbing” when you apply the brakes. Working on your brakes is a job probably best left to the professionals.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Engine coolant
Replace most engine coolant or antifreeze every 30,000 miles – or every two to three years. Newer formulas, however, may last up to 50,000 miles. To check coolant level, turn the car off and wait for the engine to cool. Locate the coolant reservoir (usually a translucent plastic tank) and eyeball the level of the coolant against the full and low indicators.

2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year Contender: Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
The particular SL Mercedes-Benz provided to us for this year’s COTY was a 550, meaning it was powered by the automaker’s 4.7-liter, 429-hp V-8. Which, after driving it, darkly reminded us of its ominous 518-hp, SL63 AMG big brother. Why so dark and ominous? Because Mercedes has been building a string of sporting cars recently with more horsepower than handling poise (excepting the wonderfully anomalous C63 AMG, which gets it completely right).
Not surprisingly, the test team struggled to control the SL550 around our figure-eight course. But it was crazy quick in a straight line, and granite-stable well into triple-digit speeds. Said associate editor Rory Jurnecka: “Super-planted at 120 mph on the straight — totally unflappable.” These are two different cars: the cornering SL and the straight-line SL.
Slow the pace and look around, and you’ll find an impressive chunk of Mercedes-Benz here. The SL’s interior is replete with technology so extreme, you wonder if we’re getting to the point where carmakers are coming up with stuff just to startle customers. One example is AirScarf, warm air that bathes your neck on cool top-down evenings. And there’s Magic Sky Control, an “electro-chromatic technology” that changes an ordinary-looking glass roof nearly opaque at the press of a button.
In his notes, editor-in-chief Edward Loh said, “I think thousands of Orange County-ians will simply appreciate the big star on the long nose.” That’s about right.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Oil changes every 3,000 miles used to be required jobs, just like cleaning the accumulated fuzz from record player needles or defrosting freezers. Today, advances in engine design and lubricants make oil changes something to be done when the schedule calls for it, not when granddad says it's time. Some cars call for 5,000-mile change intervals, some up to 15,000-mile stints. Others have a variable timer. Follow the schedule and use the oil called for by the manufacturer.

Tune-Up Anachronism
There are no more "tune-ups." Valves no longer need adjusting, ignition timing is computer controlled and there are no carburetors to fiddle with. About all that's left of the old tune-up drill are the spark plugs. These are often good for 100,000 miles, so don't change parts just to change parts. Instead, save up for those big 60,000- and 120,000-mile services when the timing belt, spark plug wires and coolant are due for replacement.

2013 Motor Trend SUV of the Year: Mercedes-Benz GL
The flavor didn't matter. From the fuel-sipping, diesel-powered GL350 to the "how can this be the weaker of the two V-8s?" GL450 to the "3-ton objects should not move this quickly" 429-hp GL550, Mercedes has built an SUV that's better than the rest. Not just in its competitive class: The new, second-generation GL is the best new SUV on the market period, and the winner of our prize. Going into our weeklong test, some of us (hi, Mom!) suspected that the massive Mercedes would be the one to beat. After all, the very closely related ML finished second to the Range Rover Evoque last year, and we've always liked the three-row GL more than its two-row sibling. Little did we realize just how badly the GL would bully the other 10 competitors. At the end of our testing, we'd narrowed the field down to three potential winners: the GL, the Ford Escape, and the Nissan Pathfinder. But in truth, it was no contest. Now, of course, there's a 900-pound gorilla (or, with the GL, a 5700-pound elephant) in the room: price. The GL never has been cheap. In December 2006, when we handed the first-gen GL our SUV of the Year calipers, the base price was $55,675. Five years later, the kitty has gone up: $63,305 is the price of admission to the "entry-level" GL350 Bluetec. Of course, the one we drove costs $87,500, a very pretty penny. Should you opt for gasoline propulsion, you'll need $64,805 at minimum. I say minimum because our GL450 showed up with an as-tested price tag of $94,265. Ahem. From there, things go stratospheric, with the GL550 starting at $88,485; the white monster we drove stickers for $108,310. Gulp. Oh, yeah, there's a GL63 AMG on the way. The price for that decadent, unnecessary luxury item? If you have to ask... So, yes, the GL in all its forms ain't cheap. Until you start considering its segment. After all, the full-size, seven-passenger luxury SUV goes up against rivals like the Cadillac Escalade and the Infiniti QX56, both of which start -- like the Mercedes -- at just over $60,000. Then you've got big-money vehicles such as the Lexus LX, which begins life at more than $80,000. The Audi Q7 can be had for a lot less money (around $47,000 to start), but throw in an engine that competes with any of the three offered on the GL and tick a few option boxes, and you're in the same tax bracket as the much bigger Benz. The real point, however, is how totally and completely the new GL dominates this segment. Calling it best in class is the definition of an understatement. It's the best the class has ever seen. Let's start with the interior. Both the GL450 and GL550 showed up with designo interiors -- Mercedes-speak for "up yours, Audi" -- and we were all wowed. Our very Midwestern Frank Markus says of the GL450's Porcelain Leather, "More than $4000 almost seems reasonable for the Bentley-grade white designo interior in the 450. I want!" Then, of course, there was the Auburn Brown interior in the GL550, and it, my friends, was even nicer. As a few manufacturers have started doing recently, Mercedes now has the option of non-glossy, open-pore wood. And the grainy stuff in the GL550 is the best I've ever seen -- in any car. Oh, and the non-designo interior in the GL350 is nothing to sneeze at. Says Markus, "This is an S-Class wagon, from a cockpit opulence standpoint." As for interior dislikes, there weren't many. Our whole team agreed that COMAND, Mercedes-Benz's version of iDrive, is in serious need of a major rethink. That said, the 360-degree camera parking system (very similar to Infiniti's Around View) drew nothing but praise as the best the industry currently offers. The tallest member of our staff -- Scott Mortara -- did have an interesting complaint, "My only interior gripe is the seatbelt tensioner. It always pulls at my neck -- really annoying." There was also some concern about the speed at which the middle-row seats electronically fold. While not very fast compared with the other contenders' pull-levers, if your arms are full of stuff, the auto-seats are quite convenient. Especially as the front seats automatically slide forward to make room. As far as the driving experience goes, consider us impressed. The 5774-pound GL350 and its potent yet thrifty diesel engine returned the second-best observed mpg of the competition, behind the 3038-pound Subaru XV -- 18.5 mpg compared with 22.4. (The 1.6-liter Ford Escape averaged 17.7 mpg over the same roads and conditions.) Remember, the GL is the largest passenger vehicle Mercedes makes, weighing over 100 pounds more than the big boxy G550. The gasoline-powered GLs returned the worst and second-worst fuel economy of the group, but they were 1200 pounds heavier than the next beefiest contender, the Infiniti JX. And the oil-burning, 455 lb-ft of torque wonder is the entry-level engine. The breadth and quality of the GL range also impressed us. The Ford Escape also has three engine options, but they only sent us the two EcoBoosted examples, leaving us to wonder if the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four (the Escape's base engine) isn't very good. Still, Mercedes has absolutely nothing to hide. But it does have much to be proud of. "An absolutely amazing piece of machinery," crows Mortara. "An ueber-smooth ride, even in sport mode. You just float down the highway on a cloud and in silence." Floyd adds, "Over the entire two-and-a-half-day stretch, far and away the most fun I had behind the wheel was in the GL450, on both the road and off-road loops. It just shrank around me out on the winery roads. I honestly felt like I was in a sport sedan in spots." The one disappointment was the high-powered GL550. Yes, it was by quite a margin the fastest SUV here (0-60 in 5.1 seconds!), but its on-road manners left many of us wanting. Says Loh, "Ride is overcaffeinated: jittery and skittish, possibly due to the larger tires and more weight in the nose.." We all agreed the middle child 362-hp GL450 was the Goldilocks of the bunch. Especially off-road. Harwood smartly points out, "As manufacturers flock to crossovers, the capability is what suffers." Not so with the Mercedes. All three of them absolutely aced our (admittedly mild) dirt section. Markus notes, "Incredible off-road, too. No tricks, no low-range or lock, but it's sure-footed enough to billygoat right up at idle. DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) works perfectly and allows you to set your speed from 1 to 11 mph. The GL450, with low range and the terrain-response-type dial, is even better. At the highest suspension setting, when the diagonal wheels lost traction, it seemed to lower the suspension to find grip. Even the 550 managed to idle up at 1 mph without spitting a single grain of dust." The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL truly is the complete package. As Mortara attests, "There is nothing more you could want or need in an SUV." Our editor-in-chief Loh puts it more colorfully: "Imagine a gigantic Swiss Army knife, with 50-some tools (one of the tools is a Leatherman, which itself has 50 tools). Now imagine all the blades are gold-plated platinum, and the inlaid mother-of-pearl handle is wrapped in leather from a Himalayan bald eagle. That's basically the GL." At first glance against our six criteria -- Performance of Intended Function, Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Efficiency, Safety, and Value -- the Mercedes nails five of them. Value is, of course, the sticky wicket. But as stated earlier, when you start comparing apples to apples, the GL is no more expensive than the vehicles it directly competes against. And when you consider just how ahead of its class the big Benz is, you realize that the GL is indeed six for six. Impressively well done again, Mercedes. Courtesy of Motortrend.com

Mercedes-Benz GLA first spy photos emerge
A while ago Mercedes-Benz announced its intensions of launching several compact models, including a compact crossover based on the firm’s MFA small car platform that is utilized for the latest A-Class and B-Class models. These are the first spy photos of the upcoming GLA crossover which promises to look a bit sportier than other models in this segment while sticking to the engines available for the A- and B-Class models, along with a potential hotter AMG version.
Chances are that this model will also arrive in the United States in 2014, after a European debut next year. We don’t know if Mercedes plans on offering both FWD and AWD versions of the GLA, but we’re almost certain that the entry-level engine will be a 4-cylinder with 211 hp (157 kW) linked to a dual clutch, 7-speed transmission.
In one of the attached spy photos you will also see the CLA which is also based on the MFA platform and will get just about the same engines as the A-Class, while the styling will be influenced from the CLS. The CLA will be manufactured at the company’s Kecskemét factory in Hungary, probably where they will also make the GLA.

Mercedes Makes a Bold Statement
The specs are astonishing — 740 horsepower and a zero-to-62-mph romp of less than four seconds. But the most headline-grabbing fact is that this four-motor, all-electric supercar emits zero emissions. Tesla might have created the electric-supercar sector, but now Mercedes owns it.
This year, as if to support that amazing SLS EV, the company is also showing the B-Class Electric Drive. A near-production-ready model with a good range and enough shared with the mainstream car to keep the price low, it'll be Mercedes' alternative to the Nissan Leaf.
No Mercedes show stand would be complete without a far-sighted concept. This year, the S-Class Aesthetic S sculpture is that. It isn't actually even a car, just a sculpture that hints at the shape of the future S-Class.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class Aesthetic S Sculpture
What is it? This isn't the new Mercedes S-Class, but merely a thought-provoking sculpture to preview the upcoming big Benz. That said, the new car will feature its fair share of tech when it eventually breaks cover, including cameras that scan the road ahead and adjust the suspension to suit.
What's hot? What can you tell from a generic swoopy shape? Not much. The new S-Class will get Benz's new signature double crease down its flanks, as seen on the A-Class and CLS.
What's not? It's a sculpture. Mercedes has a history of sculptures, with Aesthetics No. 1, Aesthetics No. 2 and Aesthetics 125. But come on, it could have at least given us something more to go on, even if it was just a clay model mock-up.
How much and when? The new S-Class is slated for a 2013 release, so expect a full-on launch at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January or, failing that, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The current entry-level S-Class starts at $99.496; expect a marginal price increase for the new car.
Anything else I should know? On a quest for ever-greater efficiency, the S-Class is likely to use the same weight-saving technology — including the widespread use of aluminum — as the automaker's latest SL roadster. Don't be surprised to see a hybrid variant in the new car, including the 2.1-liter 201-horsepower turbodiesel engine and 27-horsepower electric motor combo from the current E300 Hybrid.
2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive
What is it? Remember the lurid yellow SLS AMG E-Cell concept released back in 2010? Well, this is the outcome of two years of more tweaking and honing. It's the production-ready SLS AMG Electric Drive, and it's no less impressive than the E-Cell concept.
What's hot? It's an electric-powered SLS, for crying out loud. It's awesome. Why? Because its four in-wheel electric motors make a combined 750 horsepower and 737 ft-lb of torque, a massive 258 ft-lb more than 6.2-liter V8 SLS AMG can muster.
What's not? Electric motors mean the lack of a rumbling, barking V8 soundtrack — one of the SLS's defining characteristics. Just push that throttle a little harder, however, and that colossal torque output will get all of your attention, and you probably won't worry too much about the lack of aural drama.
How much and when? The standard SLS AMG Coupe costs an impressively wallet-lightening $272,882 without options. The Electric Drive will set you back around $518,500. If you're thinking of putting your hard-earned down, it will be available in June 2013.
Anything else I should know? All that go means a zero-to-62-mph romp of 3.9 seconds, marginally slower than the 3.8-second offering from the standard V8-engined variant. A range of 156 miles isn't bad, either. Those sensational gull-wing doors remain, too, so you'll still look ultracool exiting the car in front of that restaurant, even if nobody will hear you coming.

Kicherer Mercedes CLS63 AMG Yachting
[[posterous-content:pid___0]]German tuner Kicherer recently unveiled their Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Yachting that includes a host of upgrades to the already near perfect four-door Mercedes coupe.
Kicherer paired the CLS AMG with RS-1 forged wheels in size 20 inch on the front axle and in size 21 inch on the rear axle. Electronic adjustment allowed the chassis frame to be optimised, and a braking system with steel flex brake lines and full-cover film in star-graphite complement the exterior package.
Most importantly, for power, the German Tuners managed to upgrade the 5.5 liter biturbo engine’s performance to 625hp and 860Nm. The removal of the Vmax blocker ensures that the CLS 6.3 Yachting can now reach 300km/h (186 mph). Kicherer also fitted a limited slip differential and powerconverter, which increases the sense of acceleration by neutralising the moment of inertia on the electronic accelerator pedal.
On the inside, Kicherer designed an exclusive Yachting outfit in which leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber have been used.
Pricing details have not yet been announced.

Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class Electric Drive Bound for 2012 Paris Auto Show
A market launch of the EV is planned for 2014.
"The particularly family-friendly electric car is almost ready for series production," said Daimler in a statement on its Web site.
No word yet on pricing or whether the new EV is on tap for the U.S.
Mercedes-Benz previewed the Concept B-Class Electric Drive on Monday, saying is equipped with a 100kW electric motor and has a range of 124 miles. It features an "energy space" in the floor of the vehicle for the car's lithium-ion battery, thus providing more cabin space.
Daimler will also debut the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive and the smart Brabus electric drive at the Paris show.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Cruises Santa Monica Streets in Unimog
Since the demise of the Hummer, former Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger has moved on to the Mercedes-Benz Unimog. He was spotted on Thursday driving around the rough terrain of Santa Monica in his new monster truck.
The 65-year-old’s new enormous ride, the Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG, retails for about $250,000 and is the vehicle of choice for the army in Germany. You may remember we spotted Arnold testing the Unimog’s at the Unimog Museum in Germany back in July.
A number of fans gathered to admire Arnold’s ride – with one overzealous woman getting so excited that she climbed onto the front of the vehicle and clung onto the front of the bull bars.
The vehicle has reportedly been modified to fit the LA roads after being customised by a German company called Mertec.
The former actor purchased the Mercedes-Benz Unimog to go cruising around the Californian city, which is the army vehicle of choice for many different armies, including Germany, Britain and the United States.
According to Mercedes Benz, the Unimog range of cars is perfect for: ‘The most extreme, arduous tasks, including: fighting forest fires, performing rescue operations during catastrophes or maintaining power supply lines.’ Perfect for what the Terminator might face while he battles with his soon to be ex-wife
Arnold happily shook the hands of fans before hopping into his new pick-up truck and driving home.

AMG to Engineer All Mercedes V12 Engines
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
V12 engines are known for many reasons, not least the obscene power that they can put out. Mercedes has often used these luxury powerhouses in flagship models to create hugely fast yet refined vehicles. In the face of increased pressure from the economically minded however, V12s are becoming increasingly rare. Reducing engine size seems to be a current trend too, with the A45 having only a turbocharged 2.0 liter.Fortunately, Mercedes have confirmed that these ultimate engines will remain in the line-up, and have announced their continuation for the time being. At the same time however, the luxury automaker has decided not to develop or produce their own V12s. But fear not, they will instead be outsourced to performance obsessed AMG.
Now that can’t be a bad thing. AMG already have considerable V12 experience, with the engines being used in the AMG engineered SL65, S65, CL65 and G65. AMG also supply a 12-cylinder for the Pagani Huayra. All are incredible cars, so we’re not worried. In fact, it’s exciting. All of these engines produce upwards of 600bhp and enormous amounts of torque, so it’s unlikely any of the V12s produced will be much less powerful than that.
The move makes sense, as the number of all-Mercedes models sporting a V12 is currently very thin on the ground. There are also indications that some smaller supercar manufacturers might want to use AMG’s V12 in their future concepts. With the new AMG inspired C-Class Coupes proving very popular too, some are suggesting that AMG might be playing a bigger role in the Mercedes line-up in the future.
While the current crop of V12 cars carry a hefty price tag, the reluctance of many to buy a car with a large engine means that second-hand V12s are a very realistic proposition.
The first car to use an AMG made V12 in the standard Mercedes line-up is likely to be the upcoming S600, which is expected out in the next year or two. It will probably feature a detuned version of the current 6.0 litre bi-turbo V12.
The V12 is dead. Long live the V12.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series caught on the 'Ring
Th unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series isn't that far off. Prototypes have been popping up in spy photographers' image banks for a while, now we have some video of the hardest SLS AMG the street-legal world will ever know.
The specification remains a mystery, though, even down to what engine will find its way tucked well back under that long hood. The money seems to be on a last hurrah for the 6.2-liter V8, uprated to something beyond 600 horsepower from its current 563 through engineering and not forced induction. A report in Car and Driver predicts the Black Series will lose 100 or so pounds and get strengthened running gear to cope, along with the usual fare that makes every Black Series a volcanically hard performance tool.Courtesy of autoblog.com
