Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon drives 500,000 Miles Around the World

“The more you have traveled, the more you realize how little you have seen.” Gunther Holtorf and his late wife Christine, are truly an adventurer’s inspiration.  Having been traveling in a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon, which he named Otto, for the past 23 years, Gunther has covered an approximate 500,000 miles (800,000km), the equivalent of 20 times around the world.

It began back in 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, Gunther and Christine set out on what was meant to be an 18-month tour of Africa in their Mercedes-Benz G Wagon.  The German former airline executive has travelled the world in Otto, never having a serious breakdown.  The engine always started for him and he was able to fix nearly every problem on his own immediately, a testament to Mercedes’ engines.

His G-Wagon has taken him to several amazing places around the world, his story is inspiring.  Watch the video o see some of the amazing places he’s managed to take his beloved gelandewagen, Otto.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class To Get Inflatable Seatbelt

Inflatable_seatbelt

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be the first vehicle in the lineup to get the new Beltbag, an inflatable seatbelt that can reduce the risk of injury to rear-seat passengers in the event of a frontal crash.

Mercedes-Benz debuted the Beltbag on Friday. The automaker told Inside Line to expect it to be standard equipment on the next-generation S-Class due to be unveiled in the first half of next year.

Mercedes-Benz is not the first automaker to introduce such a safety device. Ford introduced inflatable rear seatbelts on the 2011 Ford Explorer. At the time Ford said the advanced restraint system was "designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries."

Mercedes-Benz said its version of the inflatable rear seatbelt reduces the load on the thorax, the part of the trunk between the neck and the abdomen.

"The multi-layered seatbelt strap has tear seams and can be inflated up to around three times its width by means of a gas generator," the company said in a statement.

It noted that consumers rated it highly for its "good comfort characteristics and extremely soft strap edging."

Start of production at the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant - Offensive in the Compact Segment: First New A-Class Rolls Off the Production Line

New_plant

  • Dr Dieter Zetsche: "This start of production marks a further milestone in our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy."
  • Dr Wolfgang Bernhard: "Thanks to the joint architecture we can flexibly produce all models of our new compacts on the same production line at the respective site."
  • Daimler invests total of €1.2 billion in Rastatt plant
  • Compact SUV to be next model from Rastatt
Rastatt, Germany – In the light of the motto "the pulse of a new generation", the first new Mercedes-Benz A-Class rolled off the production line today at the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant. The A-Class is the company's second new compact model, following the start of production of the new B-Class at Rastatt in September 2011 and at the new Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét, Hungary at the end of March 2012.

"This start of production marks a further milestone in our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy. The A-Class represents our offensive in the compact segment", said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "And there is more to come: The compact SUV will be the third model we will build here in Rastatt."

Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Manufacturing & Procurement Mercedes-Benz Cars & Mercedes-Benz Vans: "We are on a roll in manufacturing as well: Hard on the heels of the new B-Class, we are now producing the totally new A-Class for our customers. Thanks to the joint architecture, we can flexibly produce all models of our new compacts on the same production line at the respective site."

Daimler is investing a total of around €1.2 billion in the Rastatt plant for the production of the new compact models. In a first wave of expansion, €600 million were used e.g. for the construction of a new bodyshell building and for tools, and a further €600 million will follow this and next year for a second wave of expansion. These new investments are slated for modifications of the assembly and corresponding equipment installations in the bodyshell production.

Another €400 million will be invested in the powertrain plants this and next year for production of components solely used in the new compact models. A total of 900 new permanent jobs have been created at Rastatt since 2010, 500 of them in 2012 alone. The plant is thus responding to the ongoing high demand, and continues to grow with the new generation of compact cars.

Since the start of sales in mid-June more than 40.000 customers have already ordered the new A-Class. More than 70.000 vehicles of the new B-Class were delivered to customers since its market launch in November 2011, "Demand for our premium compact cars is so strong that we are going to to introduce a third assembly shift in October 2012", said Peter Wesp, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant. "Our team in Rastatt is doing a fantastic job, and we are very proud of their achievements." The number of trainee positions has been increased to 70 per year.

About the new A-Class
The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sets new standards in the compact segment: exceptionally emotive in its visual design, dynamic with engine power ratings ranging from 80 kW (109 hp) to 155 kW (211 hp), highly efficient with emissions from 98 g CO2/km and a best-in-class drag coefficient value of 0.27. The new A-Class underlines at the same time that safety is not a matter of price at Mercedes-Benz – among others, the radar-supported COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system comes as standard equipment. Prices in Germany start from €23,978.50 (incl. 19% VAT) for the A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY.

About the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt
The Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant was inaugurated in 1992. The first production model was the E-Class, made until 1996. Series production of the A-Class, which established the premium compact car segment, began in 1997. Unit sales of the A-Class reached
1.1 million until 2004, when the second generation was introduced.
The team at Rastatt has now made more than a million units of the successor generation. 2005 saw the arrival of another model, the B-Class, over 700,000 of which were supplied to customers all around the world over the following six years. The Rastatt plant is the company’s centre of competence for Mercedes-Benz compact cars.
In September 2011 the new B-Class went into production at Rastatt as the first of the new compact car models. The new generation of compact cars comprises the A-Class, the B-Class and a further three sporty and emotive vehicles, including a coupé and an SUV. These five new compact models are built in a production network of the Mercedes-Benz plants in Rastatt and Kecskemét, Hungary, which opened at the end of March 2012. The Rastatt plant will produce three of the five models: the new A-Class, the B-Class as well as the compact SUV.

CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake: The performance trendsetter

Mb
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Mercedes-AMG is once again demonstrating its qualities as a visionary, this time with the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. The new AMG high-performance vehicle is the exciting enhancement of an innovative vehicle concept. As an attractive alternative for design-oriented car enthusiasts, the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake combines performance with style and usability in a completely new way. Synonymous with the dynamism which is typical of AMG are features such as the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a power output range of from 386 kW (525 hp) to 410 kW (557 hp), the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension.

The generous interior and luggage compartment with a volume of up to 1550 litres reveal the practical sides of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. In addition to attractive optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio to enhance the driving dynamics even further, another unique highlight is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. And as a truly exceptional offering there is also the time-limited CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake "Edition 1" boasting an additional 24 kW (32 hp) of power and 100 Nm of torque as well as some particularly exclusive appointment features.

Mercedes-AMG is showing courage and with the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is presenting a performance trendsetter in a new market segment. The CLS 55 AMG already had no direct competitors back in 2004. The first four-door performance Coupé inspired other automotive manufacturers and over the years has come to be copied many times. The successor model presented in 2006, the CLS 63 AMG with an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, and the current CLS 63 AMG with the 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine available since 2011, have consistently continued this strategy.

According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "After the successes of the CLS 55 AMG and CLS 63 AMG, with the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake we are consistently pursuing the philosophy of offering our customers unrivalled, exciting high-performance cars. The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is establishing a completely new, small and select niche sector, and is expected to delight new customers just as much as it will existing AMG enthusiasts. The combination of performance, style and usability is unique."
